When Steve Pearl passed away in November, one of the things I thought back about was sharing a locker with him in high school our senior year. We had a few things hanging in the locker. One was a Doctor Who Tardis (Police Box) that I had drawn on two of the cardboard lunch boxes that they used in our school's cafeteria, fitted together to form a box. Another was a picture that Steve had drawn for me of his superhero character "SuperBird" on one side of the paper (made out to his "good friend John") and with his arch-enemy, the X-rayed Villain on the back of the paper. Not long after, I was looking through some old role-playing material I had collected since high school and while the Tardis is probably long gone, I found the picture of SuperBird and X-rayed Villain that Steve had drawn for me. I finally got around to scanning it in so I can share it here:

What made this picture important to me is not only that it's made out "To my friend John" (which Steve made out to me) but that it had SuperBird on the front saying "Can you help me find the X-rayed Villian? I know he's around here somewhere..." and he drew the X-Rayed Villian (I just noticed that Steve spelled "villain" wrong when I scanned it in) on the back which is "around here somewhere". Steve didn't really draw all that much but I liked this enough to save it over two decades ago and to think about it when he passed away. I'm glad that I kept it and still have it. And, no, I don't know what the stain on the top was caused by but it did hang in our locker for quite a while before I took it home at the end of the year and put it away.

My friend Steve Pearl passed away on November 12, 2007
Steve Pearl (starbucking), the American Otaking of anime fandom, passed away on November 12, 2007. Some links with info include his obituary on the Anime News Network, an obituary of Steve that includes his bio from his now-offline web site, his bio from the Fan History wiki, some pictures of him from an anime convention, and an another picture of him from an anime convention.

He was my best friend in high school and my roommate for a while during and after college, though I had only seen him infrequently in recent years.

Our friend Stan brought over some old college pictures of Steve from college in 1986. Here is a great one that shows Steve's dorm room. Note the Sarah Jane/Elisabeth Sladen shrine on the lower shelf. The black and white artwork was done by Stan for Steve and Steve is holding two more pictures of her. His classic Tardis key hangs from the lower shelf. On the top shelf is The Traveller Book (role-playing game), a Robotech book, Doctor Who: The Early Years, and the Star Fleet Technical Manual. On the desk behind him is his black and white TV, his VCR, and his antenna rig (no cable on campus in those days).
